Trends Styling Module: Y2K

Y2K trend 2023

This module in my degree was about trends. For this I had to research into current trends of the time and advertise an item from a company that reflects this trend. I chose the Y2K trend as this was the decade that I grew up in, therefore I had a connection with this concept which helped fuel for ideas for shoots. The brand I chose to reflect this was Lottie London and their Y2K collection that had dropped that month (January 2023). I decided to style the items and use their products to advertise the products. I really loved this module as I loved the connection I had to it as well as being able to express my inner girlie girl. I based the colour pallet around barbies dream house, so the majority were bright colours as well as pastel colours.

Pretty Pastels

this was the first shoot I did for this module. I decided to do a vanity shoot of what I imagined Barbie would have on her vanity to style the palette. I chose bright colours and pastels to make the items stand out. The placement of items was supposed to look like organised mess on a table, which I think I achieved well.

Barbie makeover

This shoot was done by using the makeup itself. I did the models makeup and played around with props such as landline phones, the makeup items, bubble gum and experimented with different hair styles and outfits. There were some very successful images, some of which were my favourite out of the shoots for this module. I also asked my model to pose very cheeky and chirpy, how I'd imagine Barbie to pose, I also used reference images that Lottie London did for their promotion images.

Y2K Teen Bedroom

This shoot was inspired by all the chickflicks I had grown up watching that all had the aesthetic of a cute pink bedroom, chatting on the phone and reading magazines. I did these photos by laying a blanket on the studio floor and having bedside objects such as lamps, books and a phone holder to create the illusion she was lying n a bed. I then super imposed a background of a Y2K bedroom to create the look of her lying in a bedroom from the 2000s.

Barbie's bubble chair

The Last shoot for this module was shot in a hair salon. I chose this location as I loved the swinging bubble chair as it reminded me of the bubble chairs I dreamed of having as a child. I really like how this rounded off the Barbie look as it looks like something from her dream house. They also had a collage wall which reminded me of the 2000s girlie magazines which had these types of collages with puzzles telling you who your celebrity crush is.
